About this item

The MiCS5524 CO, Alcohol, and VOC Gas Sensor Breakout from Adafruit is a versatile MEMS-based sensor designed for detecting multiple gases, including carbon monoxide (CO), ethanol (alcohol), ammonia, hydrogen, and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like methane, propane, and butane. Utilizing a metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensing element, it operates by measuring changes in resistance upon exposure to these gases. The sensor provides an analog output voltage that increases proportionally with the concentration of detected gas, making it suitable for applications such as indoor air quality monitoring, gas leak detection, and early fire detection. It requires a 5V DC power supply and draws approximately 25–35mA when the heater is active. The EN pin allows for power control to conserve energy. Due to its sensitivity to multiple gases, it's ideal for detecting changes in gas density rather than identifying specific gases. Please note that this sensor is intended for hobby and educational purposes and is not certified for safety or medical applications. Calibration is necessary for accurate measurements, and the sensor's heater requires a brief warm-up period before reliable readings can be taken. The breakout board includes the sensor and a small amount of header for easy integration into projects.
