The VL53L0X ToF-based LiDAR Laser Distance Sensor is a compact, high-precision module built around STMicroelectronics' VL53L0X Time-of-Flight ranging sensor. It emits a 940nm VCSEL laser—class-1 eye-safe and invisible—and measures distance by calculating the light's travel time, delivering accurate readings up to 2 meters, regardless of the target’s color or reflectivity. Featuring embedded SPAD (single-photon avalanche diode) array technology and ST’s FlightSense engine, it achieves fast, reliable range detection with advanced optical crosstalk compensation and ambient-light immunity. The sensor houses its own microcontroller, enabling internal distance computations and simplifying integration via an I²C interface (plus optional shutdown/interrupt pins). Designed for easy deployment, the module includes a 2.8V linear regulator and integrated level shifting circuitry, allowing input voltages between 2.6V and 5.5V. With low power consumption—approximately 20mW during active ranging and just 5µA in standby—this tiny board (roughly 4.4×2.4×1.0mm for the chip) suits compact, battery-operated systems. Applications for this versatile sensor include obstacle avoidance in robotics, proximity detection in gadgets, gesture recognition, camera autofocus enhancement, and automated hand detection in appliances.
