The Elecrow Crowtail VL53L0X Laser Ranging Sensor 2.0 is a compact, high‑precision Time‑of‑Flight (ToF) distance sensor module that leverages STMicroelectronics’ VL53L0X chip (FlightSense™ technology) to accurately measure distances up to 2 meters. Unlike many traditional infrared or ultrasonic sensors, the VL53L0X outputs distance independent of the target’s reflectivity, meaning surfaces with different colors or reflectance levels yield consistent readings. This makes it especially useful in robotics, obstacle detection, IoT automation, and user‑interaction designs. The module uses a 940 nm VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface‑Emitting Laser) whose emission is invisible to the human eye. Internal optical filtering and cross‑talk compensation are built in, improving performance in ambient infrared lighting and minimizing interference. It’s designed as a miniature TOF laser ranging system, integrating a SPAD array and embedded microcontroller for timing, filtering, and control. It supports standard I²C communication for reading distance data, with additional control lines like XSHUT (shutdown/reset) and interrupt outputs for event‑driven designs. Crowtail compatibility ensures plug‑and‑play ease with Crowduino, Arduino, and official Crowtail shields or base boards. The sensor module comes with a Crowtail cable, simplifying wiring.
