The SparkFun SEN-12785 Time of Flight (ToF) Range Finder Sensor is based on the VL6180 from STMicroelectronics, a highly integrated proximity sensor that uses Time-of-Flight technology to measure the distance to a target with high precision. Unlike traditional IR sensors that estimate distance based on signal strength, the VL6180 uses an actual time measurement of how long it takes for a light pulse to bounce back—resulting in more accurate and consistent readings regardless of target reflectivity or ambient lighting. Capable of measuring distances from 0 to 200 mm (20 cm), the VL6180 also includes an ambient light sensor (ALS), allowing it to perform dual functions—both proximity detection and light level monitoring. It communicates over I2C and operates at 2.8V, with onboard voltage regulation and logic-level shifting to interface seamlessly with 3.3V or 5V systems. This sensor is ideal for gesture recognition, presence detection, robotics, touchless controls, and distance-triggered lighting or alarms. Its compact design, precision, and ability to function in a variety of lighting conditions make it a valuable tool for developers and engineers needing short-range, reliable distance measurements.
